Hannah Georgas and The Belle Game headline a concert that is part of the Vancouver Mural Festival. Meanwhile, curators have selected 28 new artists to paint this summer at as part of the festival.
The festival begins Aug 6 and culminates with the Mount Pleasant Street Party and a ticketed concert on Saturday August 11.
The artists were chosen from 700 applications. The chosen muralists’ backgrounds range from fine art to tattooing, street art, graffiti, traditional and contemporary Indigenous design, and more.
Local participants include Danielle Krysa (The Jealous Curator) and Musqueam designer and weaver Debra Sparrow. An all-female roster of international guest muralists includes FaithXLVII (South Africa), Bunnie Reiss (L.A.), and BK Foxx (New York).
Meanwhile, Ontario singer/songwriter Hannah Georgas (a Vancouver resident at one time) and local band The Belle Game will headline the Main Street Main Stage as part of the Mount Pleasant Street Party on Saturday, Aug 11. Other artists on the bill include Schwey and Shamik.
Along with the concert, the Mount Pleasant Street Party features interactive art activities, markets, street-dance contests, graffiti jams, a craft beer garden, and more. Over 125,000 people are expected to show up.
A ticketed finale concert the evening of Aug. 11 takes place at Jonathan Rogers Park (110 W. 7th Ave). The Park Show, as it’s called, features headliners A Tribe Called Red with support act Charlotte Day Wilson. Tickets are $30, with families of four getting a $100 package deal.
The Vancouver Mural Festival is a presentation of Create Vancouver Society, “a registered non-profit dedicated to artistic and cultural development in the Lower Mainland,” according to vanmuralfest.ca. CVS is partnering with Downtown Eastside Centre For The Arts, THRIVE Art Studio, Burrard Arts Foundation, and The Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House to highlight the city’s mural art. The City of Vancouver, Mount Pleasant BIA, Canadian Heritage and the Province of British Columbia are also supporters.
