Vancouver Flip-Out brings new, vintage games to the Roundhouse for three days of pinball action

Brooklyn-based artist/model Antoinette Johnson is one of the guests at this year’s pinball extravaganza Vancouver Flip-Out.

An early look at a Deadpool machine, vintage wood-rail machines, and special guest pinball wizards are a few of the highlights of this year’s Vancouver Pinball Expo.

The Expo also includes a tournament. Vancouver Flip-Out is the largest pinball tournament in Canada and the only Canadian event in the Stern Pro-Circuit, a series of 20 high-level pinball tournaments.

But you don’t have to be a pinball wizard to knock yourself out at the Expo. Players of all ages and skill levels can try their reflexes on 100+ free-play games at the Flip-Out, which is being held Sept 6-9 at the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre (181 Roundhouse Mews). Food trucks and a beer garden will also be part of the weekend. Read more below.

The games range from hot-off-the-presses, such as a new machine based on the Marvel Comics/movie character Deadpool, and vintage pinball games with wood rails, compliments of D. Gottlieb & Co. These games range from 1937-1957 and come complete with cigarette holders.

According to maker Stern’s write-up about Deadpool, “Players will be immersed in the Deadpool universe, teaming up with iconic X-Men characters Wolverine, Dazzler, Domino, and Colossus as they battle against infamous villains Juggernaut, Sabretooth, Mystique, Sauron, and Mr. Sinister. Players will also tag along with Deadpool on his time machine quests as he battles against the T-Rex and the Megalodon.”

Stern’s Deadpool features art by illustrator Zombie Yeti. Actor Nolan North voices Deadpool. The game features a 3-bank drop target with a ball lock that guards a custom molded Lil’ Deadpool bash toy target. In addition, all models include two stainless steel and wireform ramps with a Katana Sword ramp return.

Special guests of the Expo include pinball artist Dirty Donnie Gillies and artist/hairstylist Antoinette Johnson. Stern Pinball’s Jared Guynes from Dallas, a Guinness World Record Holder and pinball game collector, will also be a guest.

Now in its third year, the Expo’s main event is the tournament. As in 2017, there will also be Classic, Women, Junior, and restricted Knockout tournaments.

The tournaments start a day earlier than the Expo, on Thurs. Sept. 6, with doors opening at 4 p.m.. According to vancouverflipout.com, “Playing early is highly recommend to avoid long lines waiting to play, and to ensure you have sufficient time to play all of your games, especially in the Main division.”

There are $10,000 in prizes, in the form of cash, trophies, plaques, and pinball memorabilia to be awarded across all tournaments.
