Three to see in September—Ira Glass, Chelsea Handler and Fran Lebowitz

September is shaping up to be a great month for speakers in Vancouver.

First, there’s comedian Chelsea Handler, in conversation at the Chan Centre Sept 21, followed by Ira Glass. The NPR host of This American Life presents Seven Things I Have Learned in An Evening With Ira Glass at Queen Elizabeth Theatre Sept. 22. Topping this off is New York humourist Fran Lebowitz at Capilano University Sept. 27-28.

See below for more info on each.

Chelsea Handler—Known for her acerbic wit both onstage (as a stand-up comic and talk-show host) and in print (in books like Are You There Vodka? It’s Me Chelsea), Handler will converse with Derek Riedle, publisher of cannabis-based lifestyle site civilizedlife.com. According to the website, the event will be a town-hall style event based on “intimate conversations on pertinent issues such as politics, cannabis and culture” and “encouraging audiences to stand up, speak up, and have their voices heard.” Sept 21 at the Chan Centre (6265 Crescent Road, UBC). Tickets: $58-105 at tickets.ubc.ca.

Ira Glass—Using audio clips and images, the NPR host illustrates lessons from his life in media and broadcasting. A reviewer for dcmetrotheatrerarts.com called Seven Things I Have Learned “a well-thought-out show” that “held everyone’s attention with its emotional depth and well-paced thought-provoking stories. It is a must-see, especially for any This American Life fans.” Sept 22 at Queen Elizabeth Theatre (630 Hamilton St.). Tickets start at $60.20 (inc. fees and taxes) at ticketmaster.ca.

Ira Glass.

Fran Lebowitz—In An Evening with Fran Lebowitz, the outspoken NYC wit will no doubt offer some scathing attacks on the current president of the United States. There will be an on-stage discussion followed by a Q-and-A with the audience. Lebowitz is the first guest in the new Capilano University speaker series, which is re-launching to mark the university’s 50th anniversary. Sept 27 & 28 at BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts (2055 Purcell Way, North Vancouver). Tickets at tickets.capilanou.ca.
