Spot Prawns: Three Restaurants to Get Your Fill

The prized speciality of spot prawn appears on the docks and in the markets of Vancouver for just a brief period. This short sweet time in late spring brings us a local variety of shrimp, a seasonal seafood choice that is deliciously large, sweet, succulent, and flavourful. Is your mouth watering yet?

Vancouverites eagerly awaiting the annual spot prawn season, wait no more. The season is upon us, and here are three places you can get your fill!

Cibo Trattoria

At Yaletown’s recently re-opened Cibo Trattoria, new Head Chef Jesse Zuber is featuring a special appetizer to mark the occasion; BC Spot Prawns with farro Verde, spot prawn vinaigrette, preserved Sicilian lemon and roasted wild mushroom.

Yuwa Japanese Cuisine

At Yuwa Japanese Cuisine, the Upper Kitsilano restaurant is showcasing BC’s prized spot prawn bounty in three delicious dishes — Live Spot Prawn nigiri served with Crispy Heads; a four-piece dish of Live Spot Prawn Sashimi; and on Father’s Day weekend (June 19-21), the restaurant will also feature a dine-in only special of BC Spot Prawn Sunomono + Fiddlehead Goma-ae with Spot Prawn head dashi miso soup. It features two pieces of seasonal BC Spot Prawns, Japanese red jellyfish, seaweed, tri-colour cherry tomatoes, spinach and cucumber marinated in tosazu bonito-infused vinaigrette with shiso granite.

The restaurant is currently open Tuesdays through Sundays for takeout and limited delivery service but will reintroduce limited dine-in service to its menu of takeout and delivery options beginning the week of June 15.
