For a seasonal amusement park, Playland at the PNE’s got a lot going for it.  First and foremost, there’s the Wooden Roller Coaster – quite possibly one of the most rickety, most terrifying and most exhilarating coasters in North America.   Then you’ve got the Corkscrew coaster, which goes upside down, the classic log flume water ride, the stomach-bursting Hellevator and some other great ones.

But now things have gotten even more interesting.  The big news this week is that when Playland opens on April 30 a brand new, 20-storey-tall attraction will be looming high above the park: the so-called Star Flyer.   Judging from the pictures, this wouldn’t be the best bet for someone with a fear of heights.

The haunted amusement park:  It’s been the setting of countless horror movies over the years.  Now, it’s coming to Vancouver.  Starting on Oct. 15, Playland at the PNE – the otherwise family-friendly home of the Wooden Rollercoaster and other great rides – will be transformed into Fright Nights.

For lovers of Halloween and things that go bump in the night, this is a can’t-miss event.  Staff at the PNE have spared no effort in converting the park into a giant nightmare zone.  The first thing you’ll probably notice as you walk through the gates are the roving bands of chainsaw murderers, psychopath clowns, ogres and other ghouls.  Specially trained performers have been brought in by the PNE to play these roles, and they love to ham it up.
