CoinFest, Vancouver’s first ever Bitcoin festival is coming this Saturday. On February 15th, from 4-10pm, join the Bitcoin Co-Op at Waves Coffee downtown for a fun event with the Bitcoin community. There will be a demonstration on how the cryptocurrency works and you can practice and learn about the revolutionary technology and concept behind the new digital money.

Looking for a new car in Vancouver? Here’s a steal.

Sarah Yu, a Vancouver public relations manager, made waves this week by posting an ad for her 2006 Volkswagen Jetta, with sunroof, heated seats and 150,000 kilometres. What was extraordinary wasn’t the car, however, but the price: 8 Bitcoins.

Yu’s ad – or, more accurately, Tweet – specified that she was not accepting cash for the car, just Bitcoins, the controversial, all-digital currency.  Introduced by a computer developer in 2008, the virtual coins have skyrocketed in value over the past year, from $13 in January 2013 to more than $900 this month. Vancouver Gets World’s First Bitcoin ATM

You might not have heard of bitcoins, but they’re coming to an ATM near you.

Vancouver has just become home to the first ATM in the world that allows users to exchange bitcoins – the controversial, all digital currency – for cash.  Users can also feed cash into the machine to top-up their virtual bitcoin wallets.

The ATM is inside an otherwise unassuming Waves Coffee House at the corner of Howe and Smithe streets in downtown Vancouver.  New bitcoin users will have to have their palms scanned in order to set up a bitcoin wallet and use the machine.  Then, they can either deposit or withdraw bitcoins in conjunction with a corresponding smartphone app.
