Filming in Vancouver: Dirk Gently, Miranda Sings, Shah Rukh Khan, and more

Colleen Ballinger plays the lipstick-challenged Miranda Sings on Haters Back Off.

This week, there’s some serious girl power in the mix: a gaggle of smart gals call it a wrap, a hilariously untalented girl keeps the laughs coming, and a girl’s harrowing story of survival is getting told. In the boy department, there’s a detective duo getting ready to start shooting and one of Bollywood’s biggest boys (well, men) paid Vancouver a visit.

With that said, let’s take a look at what’s coming and leaving town.

Remember that town in Footloose where dancing was banned? Spoiler alert: that town was not Vancouver. A happy Vancouverite is a sweaty-after-dance-class Vancouverite and when it comes to busting a move, the city has a class for every style and level of experience.

Mix things up in your fitness routine by trying out one of the many fun and funky drop-in dance classes across the city. There’s no commitment and it’s a great way to find a new activity that you might love. And what’s better than beating rainy day blues than dancing up a storm? Perfect for when you’ve absolutely, positively got to shake it like a Polaroid picture.

Bhangra 101: Where to perfect your bhangra moves in Vancouver

Question: How do you prepare your best friend’s upcoming Indian wedding?

Answers: grab a great outfit that’s equal parts loose-fitting, colourful and decked with bling, get ready to eat, a lot (see loose-fitting clothing above), and attend the HSBC City of Bhangra Festival for wedding reception dance floor inspiration.

Starting May 30, bhangra will reverberate through downtown Vancouver for 10 beat-filled days at the HSBC City of Bhangra Festival. The annual spring gathering attracts Punjabi folk music and dance groups from as far as Pennsylvania, California and Finland. Rocking the stage at this year’s free event, Downtown Bhangra, local favourites like the UBC Bhangra Team, Vancity Boys Bhangra, Shan-E-Punjab Arts Club, South Asian Arts and the HSBC Bhangra Team are guaranteed to make a few toes tap and hips sway.

Whether you’re rhythmically challenged (like me) or a wannabe Rheka, Vancouver has a pretty great selection of bhangra and Bollywood classes that may just put you on stage at next year’s festival. Or, in my case, rock the reception dancefloor at my bestie’s August nuptials.
