For the Birds: World-class bird watching on Vancouver’s doorstep

Photo credit: USFWS Headquarters | Flickr

I’m staring at a regal, metre-tall sandhill crane, its slender legs knee-deep in a seaside marsh outside of Vancouver.  It sizes me up with its bright pink head – flamboyant colors worthy of a flamingo – then extends its elegant neck and lets out a majestic, ear-splitting squawk.

The stunning bird’s winter home is the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary, a 850-acre wetland on the Fraser River, approximately 40 minutes from downtown Vancouver in Delta.  The sanctuary is one of a network of parks and habitats along the Fraser Delta that make the area a top destination for bird watchers.

Bored with Marathons? Register for the Tough Mudder and Get Dirty

Running a marathon is an astounding accomplishment.  An incredible amount of mental and physical discipline, not to mention months and months of training, is required to pound the pavement for 26.2 miles.  Vancouver is home to the BMO Vancouver Marathon in May, not to mention the Sun Run in April, one of the biggest 10k races in the world.

But road races can sometimes be a little boring – to run and to watch.  Hour after hour of trotting along at a steady clip just isn’t for everybody.  And that’s where the Tough Mudder comes in – an extreme take on the old-fashioned marathon.

Tough Mudder events are kind of like timed obstacle courses.  Imagine 10-12 miles of mud and water, climbing walls and trenches, all designed by British Special Forces to test not just cardio endurance but strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie.  If that sounds like your idea of a fun day out, you can register online now for the Tough Mudder coming to BC this summer on June 23-24.

Here’s what to expect: Continue reading:

Best in Roe: BC Caviar Ranked among Best in World

I’m not much of a caviar connoisseur , so I’ll just trust the good people at Travel+Leisure on this one.

According to the magazine’s recent Best in Roe ranking, Northern Divine caviar – raised sustainably not far from Vancouver on BC’s Sunshine Coast – is among the top 5 caviars in the world.  The magazine singled out Northern Divine for it’s “crisp pop and creamy mouthfeel, with even grains.”  Yum.

Interested in sampling some yourself?  Hope you’re a big spender.  Continue reading:

Top 5 Holiday Beers in British Columbia

http://www.flickr.com/photos/9817122@N05/4272380080/

When the weather outside is frightful, nothing’s better than a nice winter beer.  Fortunately, craft breweries around BC have turned out a great crop of rich stouts, porters and ales for the holiday season.

Here are a few picks that should be available (with a little searching) around the Lower Mainland.  This list is by no means exhaustive, and I’m sure that some great craft beers have been left off.  If you’ve got some more seasonal favourites, please let us know. Continue reading:

Top 5 Granville Island Secrets

Think you know Granville Island ?  Think you’ve seen it all – the market, the artisans, the quaint cobbled streets?  Think the whole thing’s a bit too touristy, a bit too mainstream, a bit too ’90s for you?

Think again.

Dig deeper – push beyond the tourist throngs and the buskers – and Granville Island  proves fascinating, complex and even mysterious.  Try this bit of trivia for starters:  10-12 million people visit each year.  That’s more than twice as many visitors as the Coliseum in Rome gets.
