Chocolate Week Coming to Vancouver, Oct 22-28

Chocoholics, get ready to indulge.

The Vancouver pastry shop that sparked the city’s macaron craze is set to launch Vancouver’s inaugural Chocolate Week.  From Oct. 22-28, Thierry – the high-end patisserie on Alberni Street – is hosting a series of events on the art, science and passion of chocolate.

Activities range from exotic chocolate samplings to champagne-paired chocolate tasting flights and new product launchings.  The common denominator, of course, is premium, handcrafted chocolate, much of it prepared on site in Thierry’s climate-controlled chocolaterie kitchen.

Here’s a preview of what’s on tap each day of Chocolate WeekContinue reading:

Sweets for the Sweet: Best Vancouver Chocolates & Chocolatiers

Thierry chocolates from Vancouver's Thierry Patisserie.

I have no doubt that, as Valentine’s Day (February 14) approaches, mainstream blogs and magazines will publish the now de rigueur assortment of “How to Survive Valentine’s Day” screeds lambasting the holiday’s commercialization/heternormativity/ability to make non-partnered adults feel crappy.  It’s not that I don’t agree with those critiques—I usually do—but…Chocolate! Chocolate in heart-shaped boxes! Chocolate for breakfast! Chocolate all day long! How bad a holiday can it be when the traditional meal is chocolate?!

If you, like me, could care less about the rest of Valentine’s Day as long as you get your chocolate, then check out these top Vancouver Chocolate Shops & Chocolatiers for truly exceptional Valentine’s Day chocolates. Use them as gift or just indulge yourself. (I plan to.)

Vancouver’s Best Chocolate: You make the call!

This is a topic so controversial that I’m reluctant to even bring it up:  Vancouver’s best chocolate.

Earlier in the week, a great article in the Vancouver Sun profiled a chocolatier at Rogers’, one of the city’s venerable old chocolate shops.  That got me thinking about the other great chocolate makers in the city, both the good ol’ boys and the new kids on the block.
