Brandenburg Concertos kick off 2019 Vancouver Bach Festival

A two-night performance of the complete Brandenburg Concertos opens the 2019 Vancouver Bach Festival.

A presentation of Early Music Vancouver, the 14-concert festival takes place July 30-Aug 9 at Christ Church Cathedral and the Chan Center for the Performing Arts. This year marks EMV’s 50th anniversary, and the arts company is pulling out all the stops with performances by top West Coast artists specializing in period performance, and guest artists from across Europe and North America.

Top musicians to perform Mozart to help battle chronic disease

Myasthenia gravis is a chronic auto-immune disease that affects nerve transmission to the muscle. It can strike anyone at any age. Once recognized, myasthenia is treatable with medication, such as corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, plasma exchange, intravenous gamma globulin, and in younger patients, possible surgery. If diagnosed and treated early, myasthenia patients can look forward to a normal life with medication.

On Sat. March 30, a group of internationally acclaimed artists come together to perform some of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s finest chamber works in support of the Myasthenia Gravis Association of BC. The concert takes place at the Vancouver Academy of Music (1270 Chestnut St.). Find out more about who’s performing, and what, below.

Celebrate the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s 100th Anniversary with a full day of free music

This Saturday, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra celebrates 100 years of bringing classical music to Vancouver audiences. From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., on Jan 26, 12 hours of free music will mark the occasion.

In all, over 1000 musicians will perform as part of over 100 musical acts on 10 stages. All events are first-come, first-serve. Find out more below.

What to see at Modulus Music Festival

The annual Modulus Music Festival presents leading musicians and composers from the post-classical music scene. The Music on Main event thrives on experimentation and multi-media shows, and this year’s features stars of the scene such as Canadians Nicole Lizée and Eve Egoyan and the UK’s Laura Bowler.

The 2018 Modulus Festival takes place Nov. 2-6 at the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre, CBC Studio 700, and The Post at 750 (750 Hamilton St.). The festival features free talks and concerts, as well as ticketed events. See below for five Modulus happenings worth checking out.

Sonic Boom showcases best of BC contemporary classical music

A multi-day celebration of contemporary classical (new) music by BC composers, the Sonic Boom Music Festival takes place March 22-25.

Presented by Vancouver ProMusica, the festival is now in its 31st year. The annual event spotlights a BC Composer in Residence, a Featured Artist and an Ensemble in Residence, along with a mix of ensembles of one to four players. The musicians perform new works by emerging and established West Coast composers.

This year, Sonic Boom presents four evening concerts at Pyatt Hall (843 Seymour St.) and the Orpheum Annex (823 Seymour St.). Find out more below.

Acclaimed Vancouver string quartet premieres new works this Sunday

A Vancouver string quartet is premiering a new program that is intended to take listeners on a sonic journey.

Presented by Borealis String Quartet, Landscapes: A Northern Odyssey features a world-premiere composition, String Quartet No. 5, written especially for the Quartet by Vancouver composer, Owen Underhill. The BSQ will perform the piece alongside two contrasting works, one from Latvian-Canadian composer Imant Raminsh, the other by Chinese-Canadian composer Xiao-Ou Hu, both Vancouver premieres. This hot classical action takes place beginning at 3 p.m. this Sunday, March 12 at the Orpheum Annex (823 Seymour St.).

After we’ve had our fill of the beach, the fireworks, and street parties, it’s nice to know we can still get some culture in the city.

On Aug. 2-12, a plethora of musical talent pays tribute to one of the greatest composers of all time. Held downtown at the Christ Church Cathedral (690 Burrard St), with a special concert at the Chan Centre (6265 Crescent Road), the first-ever Vancouver Bach Festival hosts orchestras, small ensembles and more performing the best of Bach.
