This month’s hottest trend in a glass landing on new season cocktail menus across the city is Sake. Often believed to be a spirit or a wine, in fact, this delicious beverage is closer to beer than anything else, as it’s fermented with grain not distilled. Sake specialist, Miki Ellis from Aburi Restaurants explains:
“For people who’ve not tried Sake before, Sake cocktails – as long as they highlight the flavours and keep the integrity of the Sake – are a wonderful way to introduce people to it.
For people who have only tried hot Sake, you should know that’s usually fortified and blended with distilled alcohol –which is why you get a burn in the throat when you shoot it and then get a terrible hangover the next day! Sake doesn’t have to be like that and good premium Sake does not have to be expensive. ” Continue reading:

Westeros comes to Gastown on Tuesday, March 10 from 7 pm at Bambudda when acclaimed San Francisco bartender Matt Grippo brings a Game of Thrones themed cocktail menu pop-up to the city. “Winter is Coming” at Bambudda will have a special cocktail menu created by Matt and the team from legendary San Francisco bar, the Blackbird. To pair with this, Bambudda’s chef Curtis Luk has designed an All Men Must Dine à la carte bar snack menu. Reservations for “Winter Is Coming” are strongly suggested and can be made either by crow or by telephone at 604-428-0301. We spoke with Matt to find out more.
I’m a huge fan, and a couple of the other guys at the bar are fans too. We’ve done one-off Game of Thrones drinks before in a menu of 12, then I had an idea to do a 100% Game of Thrones-inspired menu. It was a no-brainer to make it for winter and we launched this menu on December 1st at Blackbird in San Francisco. B.C. Distilled, which returns this year on April 18, is a great opportunity to have a wee taste of what’s in those big bottles before making a commitment. It brings together 22 of the province’s leading makers of locally crafted spirits, along with a handful of artisanal beverage and food purveyors.

The savoury cocktail trend as inspired by New York and London bartenders, including drinks-slinging legend Tony Conigliaro at The Grain Store, who championed drinks such as the Pumpkin Bellini, is still going strong with vegetal and herbacious drinks appearing on fashionable cocktail bar menus across the globe. But West coast drinkers don’t need to jump on a plane to try this drinks trend, because clued-up Vancouver bartenders are pushing savoury flavours and drinks which are full to the brim with veggies and herbs.

Indeed, magic abounds during Yuletide – and sometimes you’ll find it in the most unexpected places. For the fourth annual Christmas Cocktail Crawl, we challenged bartenders across the city to design a gobletful of magic, a smoke-infused drink with an enchanting presentation rivalled only by that captivating and utterly memorable first sip. We asked for magic, for smoke and mirrors, and oh yes, they delivered.
