Culturally rich and alive with energy, Commercial Drive – better known to Vancouverites as The Drive – boasts 22 blocks packed with quaint boutiques, eclectic restaurants, live music and performance bars, theatres, cafes, specialty food shops and bakeries, as well as Vancouver’s officially designated Little Italy.
Can you picture a world without cars? Pretty hard to imagine these days. But, this weekend will give you a glimpse at a car-free world with the annual Car Free Festival being held in Kitsilano, the West End, and on Main Street. (Note: There is also a Car Free Day Festival on Commercial Drive, but it is held in July.)
On Saturday, June 16 and Sunday, June 17 (Father’s Day!) the Car Free Festival will take over some of Vancouver’s busiest roadways to celebrate the community. Local organizers create each event with a slightly different feel, reflective of the neighbourhood.
For 2018, here’s an idea about what will be happening in each of the neighbourhoods:

What would the world be like without cars? This weekend, we’ll be given a chance to experience it when Vancouver’s largest car free festival takes over three of the busiest streets in the city to host daylong community parties. These normally car-heavy streets will be shut down on Saturday, June 17 and Sunday, June 18 (Father’s Day!) to make way for festivities featuring food, music, arts and crafts, and more surprises.
Car Free Day is celebrated in four neighbourhoods in the city: Kitsilano, Main Street, Commercial Drive, and the West End. Local community organizers run each festival, which allows for a unique flavor for each event. The Kitsilano, Main Street, and West End festivals will be held this weekend, while the Commercial Drive Car Free Day has been moved to July 9, 2017.
