Vancouver Date Idea: Outdoor, Acrobatic, and Free Yoga with Your Sweetie

During my year of intense dating, I went on a few outings with a guy who was really into yoga (he taught it as well). He was also outdoorsy, smart, and basically the classic Vancouver ‘ideal’ man. I’d been practising yoga on a very casual basis for the last fifteen years or so, and was at a point in my life where I particularly needed its calming effects. The ups-and-downs of the dating process can be tumultuous, to say the least, so some meditation and child’s pose really helped.

In any case, one day he called me and suggested we do a yoga class together. Personally, I’d never thought of it as a date idea but, in fact, it’s a great activity, even if it’s wordless. I would recommend going for coffee or a bite to eat afterwards as well to discuss your class. Yoga heightens awareness of the body, so there’s something highly sensory – even sensual – about doing yoga next to someone you’re attracted to. Plus, many yoga studios incorporate partner work into their classes, which will involve some form of physical contact between you and your date. Yoga also helps with tranquility that can sometimes be elusive on a date. I have a friend who consistently goes to yoga classes with her husband when she visits a new place as a way of grounding from the bustle of travel and sightseeing.

Vancouver certainly has no shortage of stellar yoga studios that offer a wide variety of environments and yoga and teaching styles. And with the rainy season on its way out and the weather warming up (yay!), outdoor yoga is also a great option for getting your namaste on together. Here are five Vancouver yoga options that are worth checking out:

Vancouver Date Idea: Celebrate the 10th Annual Spot Prawn Festival

When spring comes around, my thoughts turn to spot prawns (and love, of course). The sustainable and local product has a sweet, delicate flavour that is unbeatable. This year, the Chef’s Table Society of British Columbia celebrates the ten year anniversary of the highly popular Spot Prawn Festival with three unique events for feasting on this glorious seafood.

Since my boyfriend’s version of cooking is pouring sauce from a jar onto pasta, cooking spot prawns are a wee bit daunting for him. Lately, he’s been wanting us to take a cooking class together, but I just haven’t found the right one for us. An event in the spot prawn fest line-up might just be the thing.

Date Idea: A Visit to the Museum of Anthropology

My boyfriend “S” has lived nearly two years in Vancouver and, up until this week, had never been to the Museum of Anthropology (MOA) at the University of British Columbia (UBC). I say this with some surprise because the MOA (6393 N.W. Marine Drive) is one of my favourite museums (and places) in the city. I go at least once a year to check out one of their temporary exhibits, but also just to visit an old friend who reminds me why I love the west coast so much.

And because I also love S, I wanted to share the MOA with him. Plus, our dates have been getting a tad humdrum (ie lounging on the couch) so I wanted to do something different for a change.

Fall in Love with Pride & Prejudice: At the Stanley Stage Until February 28

This week, I was wandering around South Granville, my lovely new neighbourhood, and was musing about romance–or the lack thereof. The chocolate shops along the street were festooned with red hearts, reminding me tauntingly that February 14th was fast approaching. I still had no idea what my boyfriend (“S”) had planned for Valentine’s Day but I had a sneaking suspicion it might not be as grand as I had envisioned.

And then, I looked up and saw the marquee for the Stanley Stage and took it as cupid giving me a sign that I didn’t need to wait for S to come up with a romantic date.

Date Idea: Ice Skating on Vancouver’s Many Indoor and Outdoor Rinks

My best first date involved skating at The Robson Square Ice Rink. I arrived at the rink with my skates and a picture on my phone of the guy I was supposed to be meeting. Ah yes, the joys of on-line dating! When he finally did arrive, I was blown away by the immediate chemistry. We were holding hands, skating side-by-side on the ice, within five minutes.

Ice skating is a lovely date since it’s inexpensive, more active and inventive than your usual chatting over coffee, and invites G-rated physical contact. If you’re feeling wobbly (or just pretending to be so), you can reach for your partner’s gloved hand and, suddenly, you’re a unit gliding along frozen water. And if you’re like me and manage to spectacularly fall at one point during the date, you can laugh at yourself with good grace.

With Valentine’s Day around the corner (hint hint), you might consider lacing up. Fortunately, Vancouver has tons of rinks, each offering a unique way of enjoying this classic winter sport together.
