It can be hard coming up with unique and entertaining date activities, beyond the usual going for a bite or a drink. Fortunately, with spring in full swing and summer around the bend, now is the perfect time to hop in a go-kart and drive on an outdoor track together!

Vancouver Date Idea: Go to the Races at the Deighton Cup

Last year, I visited London in June, and was really hoping to go to the Royal Ascot races. I love the glamour of the event, the over-the-top fancy hats, and the glitterati (including the Royal Family) in attendance. Alas, logistically, it wasn’t meant to be.

Fortunately, I have the opportunity to don my finery and watch horse races at one of my favourite Vancouver events of the summer! My boyfriend, who usually lives in jeans and a t-shirt, will also be transformed. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t own a top hat and waistcoat, but we’ll find some, I’m sure.

Vancouver Date Idea: Rent a Tandem Bike

For thirteen years, I lived downtown, just steps from the Seawall and Stanley Park. On sunny days, I’d take my bike and ride around the Park, taking in the views and the happy people I passed by. I’d often see couples on bicycles built for two (tandem) and yearn for someone who would ride with me (cue the sympathy). It seemed like so much fun! It also seemed pretty tricky for someone as uncoordinated as me, but I was more than willing to give it a try.

Every spring/summer, I come up with a list of things I want to do or attend in the city before September rolls around again (eg go to the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, suntan on Jericho Beach, have fish ‘n’ chips in Steveston, hike the Chief). This year, I told my boyfriend that we were going to rent a tandem bike at some point, and go cycling together. I can’t wait!

In preparation for our cycling adventure, I did some research on where to rent tandem bicycles in Vancouver. I also got some tips on how to ride one for a newbie like me.

Date Idea: Trying the New Buffalo Milk Gelato at Bella Gelateria

I measure my happiness by the number of times I go for ice cream during a given year. I’m also a huge fan of the ice cream date, which is a fun alternate to going for coffee or a drink on an early date. It’s also a good litmus test for compatibility with me. If a guy doesn’t like ice cream, he’s most definitely not my type. Fortunately, my boyfriend (“S”) adores ice cream as well.

The other day I was in an ice cream sort of mood: carefree, cheery, and with a raging chocolate craving. Plus, I had heard that Bella Gelateria had recently released new buffalo milk gelato and I was dying to try it. S has learned not to deny me when I’m on a food mission, so he gamely said, “Sure, let’s go!”

Granville Island Date Itinerary: From Cake Doughnuts to Live Theatre

It was around this time of year that I had a stellar date on Granville Island. Warm, sunny days were back in the city, and suddenly, indoor dates in coffee shops and bars seemed less than appealing. I had met this cute guy on-line (again), we had gone on the obligatory first date where we mutually ascertained that neither of us was crazy (I hid my quirks well), and then agreed to meet up again.

Granville Island really is one of my favourite places in Vancouver. I worked at a (now closed) bookstore there one summer, regularly do yoga classes there at Semperviva, and often shop there for groceries and gifts for friends. So, when my date made an impromptu suggestion that we hang out at Granville Island, I gave him an enthusiastic, “Yes!” Our meeting gave me the template for the perfect Granville Island date.
