Need Lunch Plans? Head Over to Street Food City II

It was rainy yesterday. You may have noticed. But that didn’t stop me and many, many other hungry Vancouverites from making our way to the bustling, temporary food cart pod – Street Food City II – situated in the north plaza of the Vancouver Art Gallery, January 23-27.

It’s unclear how many people planned to attend and how many just followed their noses. You could smell the bacon sizzling at Pig on the Street from a block away. Not to mention the smokey-sweet aroma of wood-fired Neapolitan pizza at PazzaRella, (Yes! There’s a flaming pizza oven in a food truck!) Spicy chicken karaage from Mogu Japanese Street Eats. Butter chicken naan kebab from Soho Road. There will be food porn after the jump.

Street Food City II is part of the Dine Out Vancouver smorgasbord. Street Food City I was such a popular Dine Out event in 2012, that they went ahead and made it bigger. There are more food carts this year – 13 in total. The event lasts longer, running through the upcoming weekend. You can drop by the pod 11am to 3pm weekdays. On weekends, Street Food City is open from 11am to 5pm. Tented, heated seating and live music make it that much better.

What are you having for lunch today? I’ve posted photos some of the best things I got to try yesterday, below. Continue reading:

5 Free Things to Do This January

It’s January. The holidays are over and there’s a general air of restrained spending, resolution-inspired fitness, and more kale than chocolate. We’re on our best behaviour, but we all still need to have a little fun. And the less we have to spend to find it, the better.

Here are five January events and activities that are free!

5 Free Things to Do This January

1) Ice Skating at Robson Square Ice Rink, through February 28
Location-wise, it doesn’t get much better. The Robson Square Ice Rink is in the heart of downtown Vancouver – ideal for visiting a temporary food cart pod or the Vancouver Art Gallery before taking a few slick laps with friends and family. Bring your own skates and it’s free to use. Or pay a mere $4 to rent.

2) Street Food City II, January 23-27
Before or after free ice skating at Robson Square, head over to the North Plaza of the Vancouver Art Gallery to visit a temporary, Portland-style food cart pod – one of the top events of Dine Out Vancouver Festival 2013. Entry is free! Yes, there will be heated, tented seating and live music. Of course you will have to compensate the clever chef-entrepreneurs for their goods – think wood-fired personal pizzas, Japanese-fusion pulled pork sandwiches, perogies, fish tacos, grilled cheese and more.
