Diwali is an important five-day festival in Hinduism, Sikhism, and Jainism, and a major celebration among South Asian communities in both Vancouver and throughout the Lower Mainland. In Vancouver, the biggest Diwali celebration is the annual Vancouver Celebrates Diwali Festival, which runs from November 2 – 7, 2010.
Produced by the non-profit Diwali Celebration Society, the 7th annual Vancouver Celebrates Diwali Festival has two major events: the Opening Ceremonies on November 2 and Diwali Downtown, a massive, FREE all-day festival at Yaletown’s Roundhouse Community Centre on November 7. While the Opening Ceremonies start the festival with panache—and an official recognition of the holiday—it’s Diwali Downtown that shouldn’t be missed.
