Chinatown’s landmark Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden is a gorgeous venue for outdoor summer concerts: when you’re there—the starry lights twinkling, the music pouring over you—it feels like you’re a world away from the city. It’s magical.

Every summer, in July and August, the Chinese Garden hosts Enchanted Evenings on Friday nights, a series of outdoor world music concerts performed at the Garden’s exquisite outdoor and indoor spaces.

Enchanted Evenings Concet Series at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Chinese Garden

One of Vancouver’s most popular summer concert series is the Enchanted Evenings concert series at Chinatown’s exquisite Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden.

Over the course of nine Friday nights, Enchanted Evenings brings a varied, multicultural selection of artists to Sun Yat-Sen Garden’s indoor and outdoor spaces. For 2011—the Garden’s 25th anniversary—performances range from the hard-driving, African rhythms of Pepe Danza and Jacky Essombe to the trademark blues of Vancouver’s own Jim Byrnes.

China Tea Deal 3 at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden

After two groundbreaking summers in the heart of Vancouver’s Chinatown, Seven Tyrants Theatre presents the exciting third chapter of their roving historical fairytale: The China Tea Deal 3. Now, don’t be alarmed by the number “3” in the title of the show – you definitely do not have had to have seen the first two chapters in order to enjoy, be engaged and follow this show.

The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden is the perfect setting for this roving theatrical piece that takes you on a journey to 18th century China. In this interactive fairytale, the audience is enlisted as Captain Woodfellow’s “crew” to help navigate the forces at play as he tries to salvage his deal with the elusive Scholar of Suzhou.

Dr. Sun Yat Sen Chinese Garden in Vancouver's Chinatown

One thing I adore about summer in Vancouver is the way great entertainment gets taken outside, with the outdoor Theatre Under the Stars at Stanley Park, the open-backed tents of Bard on the Beach, and the Enchanted Evenings Concert Series at Chinatown’s exquisite Dr. Sun Yat Sen Chinese Garden.

With its setting among Dr. Sun Yat Sen’s classical beauty of weathered rocks, calming waters and stunning architecture, the Enchanted Evenings Concert Series is definitely one of Vancouver’s summer delights.
