With the amazing weather in Vancouver lately, the best place to spend these long, hot days is next to the water. Beach bums in Vancouver know that one of the hottest spots in town is English Bay Beach.

A water slide and huge raft, beachside fish n’ chips, and non-stop people watching entertainment, English Bay Beach is the place to be in the summer. But, when you’re spending a day at the beach – usually you have to lug down a bunch of chairs, an umbrella, and a huge cooler with you.

Until now! There’s a new crew in Vancouver that’s working to upgrade your beach game in a big way… The Vancouver Beach Company has partnered with the Vancouver Parks Board to provide rental options for chairs/loungers and beach umbrellas for those who want to park themselves at the beach without having to deal with the extra baggage that usually comes with it.

For shade-seekers who still enjoy relaxing in the sand, good news was just announced! The Vancouver Board has officially approved a private company to rent out beach chairs and umbrellas at Vancouver’s most iconic beach: English Bay.

“The Vancouver Shade Company” has been approved to rent out beach chairs and umbrellas for those looking to enjoy a day at the beach without the threat of sunstroke. The company may also provide other items, including beach toys and sunscreens. This is a great option for people who don’t want to lug a big umbrella onto the bus (or a plane for that matter)!

Residents in Vancouver and Toronto got a surprise today: aquatic animal sculptures made of litter at two of the cities’ most popular coastal beaches: English Bay Beach in Vancouver and Ashbridge’s Bay in Toronto.

The sculptures are made of garbage commonly found on Canadian coastlines and beaches and are part of an effort by the Vancouver Aquarium and WWF-Canada to increase awareness about the need to clean up our shorelines during the annual Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup.

Started by the Vancouver Aquarium, the Cleanup is designed to achieve real, measurable impact on the environment and help Canadians feel like true “environmental citizens”.

You can see English Bay Beach’s huge, life-like seals (pictured above) today, August 26, from 8am – 7pm.

You can join the effort to clean up coastal Vancouver by volunteering for the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup happening September 18 – 26, 2010. Sign up online here.
