Among the many films coming to this year’s Vancouver International Film Festival (Sept 29-Oct 14) are a number that recently won accolades at the Toronto International Film Festival. Among the highlights are a claustrophobic domestic drama, an unconventional rape-revenge movie from the director of Showgirls, and Shia LaBeouf.

‘A slap in the face’ kicks off the Vancouver Latin American Film Festival kicks tonight!

The Vancouver Latin American Film Festival kicks off tonight with I Promise You Anarchy (Te prometo anarquía), a film described by festival artistic director Christian Sida-Valenzuela as “a slap in the face.”

The film, which includes cast members scouted out via Facebook, screens at 7 p.m. tonight (Aug. 25) at SFU Woodward’s (149 W. Hastings St.), with an opening night party following at The Charles Bar (136 W. Cordova). (There’ll be another screening of I Promise You Anarchy Aug. 27 at Cinematheque). Director/writer Julio Hernández Cordón will be present at both.

All told, the festival will present more than 60 films, many highlighting the importance of cinema from Brazil, which is this year’s guest country of honour. The 2016 edition also features a new section called ¡Activismo!, which is made up of films that discuss political and social movements in Latin America.

The Evil In Us is a Canadian-made horror film screening with the one-day Badass Film Festival Feb. 21.

A movie described by one reviewer as “one of the most brutal horror films I have ever seen” is coming to Vancouver as part of the 2nd Annual Badass Film Festival.

The movie is Atroz (lit. translation: Atrocious) by Mexican filmmaker Lex Ortega. It’s one of two feature films being screened at the festival, which takes place Feb. 21 at Vancity Theatre (1181 Seymour St.). On the VBAFF website, the one-day event is described as a showcase for “the best in extreme cinema (including horror, noir, SF/fantasy, avant-garde, and wild action) from local, Canadian and international short and feature films.”
