Get ready for all the souvlaki and spanakopita you can handle: two annual Greek festivals are about to kick off in Vancouver. While one takes place in East Vancouver and the other on the west side of the city, both feature food, dancing, and plenty of high spirits.

The best known is Greek Day on Broadway. The annual street party takes place this Sunday (June 28) and shuts down Kitsilano on West Broadway from MacDonald to Blenheim as people pour into the streets.

The free event, which is sponsored by the Hellenic Canadian Congress of B.C., attracts almost 100,000 revellers. There will be music and dance entertainment on two stages, and the street is lined with food vendors hawking favourites like loukoumades (honey dumplings).

Shouts of “Opa!” and dancing will fill West Broadway in Kitsilano on Greek Day, June 24. This free, family-friendly festival is a homage to the Greek community’s 100-year presence in Vancouver and Greek contributions to international civilization. I think the Greek deserve a little credit, don’t you?

With over 23 food vendors, a Greek wine tasting tent and an Olive Iliad tasting bar, it’s easy to sum up the exuberant celebration as a foodie event. But Greek Day also boasts music, art and tons of culture.

Linger by one of the live music stages. Shop in the Athenian Agora. Make a mosaic or an olive wreath in the Kids’ Zone. Take load off in the Family Picnic Area.

Love gyros and chicken souvlaki, loukoumades, hand-made custard bougatsa and baclava? Then I know exactly where you will want to be this Sunday: the annual Greek Day on Broadway! (Seriously: the bougatsa is always divine!)

Greek Day on Broadway is one of my favourite Vancouver summer events. It’s a fun, free celebration of all things Greek, featuring loads of food (naturally), traditional Greek dancers, live music, kids’ activities, and lots and lots of charm.

Greek Day revelers on W Broadway

Greek Day revelers on W Broadway

I don’t know about your weekend, but I took in enough beer, skewered food and things made with filo dough to meet my caloric needs for a week. (Not that that will actually happen, of course.) Which is my way of saying: I went to the Greek Day on Broadway Street Festival Sunday.

(And, no, I didn’t even try for the loukoumades eating competition.)
