After my recent post on Hastings Racecourse, I thought I had to say something about this. This weekend (July 16, 17) Hastings will be hosting wiener dog races. It’s free to watch and parking is free, too.
The wiener dogs only race a small portion of the horse track. But their handlers actually load them into the starting gate (more or less) and there’s a live announcer commenting on all the action. The dogs race in multiple heats throughout the afternoon (Just an FYI: These races are totally tongue-in-cheek – none of the ethical quandaries of greyhound racing).
Races take place in heats during the half-hour intervals between the official horse races. On Saturday, July 16, the first horse race is at 3:20 p.m., and there will be five wiener heats scattered throughout the afternoon. On Sunday, July 17, the first horse race is at 1:50 p.m. There will be three wiener dog heats, followed by a grand finale where the winners of all eight heats face off.
In the meantime, here’s a video of last year’s races.
