Celebrated on March 8 every year, International Women’s Day (IWD) is a focal point in the movement for women’s rights.

Celebrated monthly, Paul Anthony’s Talent Time presents a variety show consisting of musical, comedic, and other kinds of talent, mostly from the Lower Mainland.

On March 7, these two forces come together in a nonstop rollercoaster of empowered entertainment: Paul Anthony’s Talent Time: Celebrate Women’s Day! Let’s see what Mr. Anthonly has in store at the Rio Theatre (1660 E. Broadway) event.

Toronto’s Bloody Marys, Portland’s Broke Gravy among this year’s Vancouver Improv Festival guests

Toronto’s The Bloody Marys.

Improvised TED Talks, naughty puppets, twisted sci-fi dystopia and more are on the docket of this year’s Vancouver International Improv Festival.

Out-of-town performers include The Future from Philadelphia, Broke Gravy from Portland, Rapid Fire Theatre from Edmonton. Local improv stars such as Hip.Bang! and The Fictionals are also taking part.

All told, the 19th edition of the festival, has 40 performances scheduled during its Oct. 11-14 on Granville Island. Here’s a look at some of the acts.

Improv comedy meets Game of Thrones in Throne and Games!

With its British accents, fire-breathing CGI dragons, moody stares and leather-and-studs fashion, HBO’s Game of Thrones is ripe for parody.

A Vancouver comedy troupe has taken up the challenge. The Fictionals Comedy Co. have already performed two Throne and Games, their improvisational riff on the show and series of books; next week, on June 5, the company will present the third and final instalment of Throne and Games. So what can audiences expect?
