Vancouver’s Trans-centric Monthly Club Party: Coconutz and Bananas

A safe and inclusive oasis of body positivity has popped up in Vancouver’s club scene in the form of the city’s very first trans-centric club party, Coconutz and Bananas!

Coconutz and Bananas (C&B) premiered at the Odyssey in August 2017, and is on monthly for nights full of gogo dancers, DJs, drag, and performers, delivering trans and non-binary curated entertainment by and for the city’s LGBTQ2+ community. Continue reading:

The Vancouver Comic Arts Festival—or Van CAF for short—is a really rad event. Last year when I was there I noticed that there was an especially great group of LGBTQ2 creators, who I just stumbled upon while wondering aimlessly. Visit the B.C. Gay and Lesbian Archives in Vancouver’s West End

If you’re not a LGBTQ+ library/archives nerd like me, you probably don’t even know that nestled in Vancouver’s West End is the B.C. Gay and Lesbian Archives, an incredible resource preserving the history of both Vancouver and the wider province’s LGBTQ+ populations. Late last year, I visited the Archives to do some research on the history of Vancouver’s LGBTQ+ Out on the Shelves Library (more on that in a future post!). I was astounded at the breadth and depth of material and at the dedication of the archivist Ron Dutton, who selflessly runs the archives out of his own apartment!

When you walk down Davie St in the heart of Vancouver’s gay village and see the familiar hot pink electric sign for Little Sister’s Book & Art Emporium—often known just as Little Sister’s—you might not realize you’re passing a lot more than an LGBTQ+ book and sex toy store. While Little Sister’s is certainly a great place to find queer books (print and digital), sex toys, rainbow pride gear, trans supplies like binders, and more, it is also a powerful queer institution with a revolutionary history.
