Girl meets boy; boy meets girl; girl rejects boy; girl finds herself thriving without a man and then falls for one anyway; boy becomes successful in life and gains the trust of girl; star-crossed man and woman beat all odds to be together… We can all think of at least ten films immediately for each of these plotlines. They’re popular because they’re real, so many of us see ourselves in these moments. But many of us can also see ourselves in these moments when the genders aren’t strictly binary, and when the relationships are same-sex.

Vancouver’s LGBTQ2+ community has a diverse range of groups, foundations, not-for-profits and charitable organizations devoted to education, fundraising and providing services for needs specific to our community. Many were created and evolved out of necessity, to address issues and provide services for people and situations that were not being addressed, or fully funded publicly.

All New at Vancouver Pride: The Queer Improv Festival

Brand new this Pride Season is The Queer Improv Festival, which is running from July 10th to August 7^th. All the shows are being held at The Junction (1138 Davie Street), and have been curated by Michael Sousa, a 4-year-strong-member and the current Artistic Director of the QueerProv troupe. We spoke to Michael about QueerProv and this new festival.

Thorgy Thor and the Vancouver Symphony Team Up

Drag is finally getting its long-deserved moment in the mainstream spotlight. A incredibly creative art form, many queens have to be skilled in fashion, makeup artistry, lipsyncing, comedy and branding. The reality television series RuPaul’s Drag Race has introduced 140 queens to audiences over 11 seasons, and as the show has grown in popularity, there has been a wider variety of queens playing with the traditional camp vs. pageant drag queen form. Thorgy Thor is a brilliant example of this mix; a classically trained musician who spoke yearningly about performing in drag with an orchestra (“thorchestra”) during her time on the show.

It’s the 50th anniversary of Stonewall this year, and you bet we’ll be celebrating the strides the LGBTQ2IA communities have made with events across Vancouver all season. Beyond the celebrations, Pride is also very much about advocating for love and acceptance where, as a society, we can do better.
