This November, my absolute dream queer literary event—and possibly yours too—is coming to Vancouver. Local storyteller Ivan Coyote and Toronto-based artist Vivek Shraya are teaming up for a multi-disciplinary show called Pretty Good, combining their various talents as writers, poets, storytellers, and musicians. It’s a short-running show, visiting only Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary, and Edmonton, as if it’s some sort of special gift for western Canada! Pretty Good will feature these two talented artists as “they revisit family origins, sing about scars and skeletons, and perform brand new material from their new books.” Another queer Vancouver author, Amber Dawn, will be joining Ivan and Vivek as a guest.

In days mostly gone by, the record store was a world revolving on its own: secrets were swapped about samples, album drops anticipated by faithful fans who stood by with sweaty bills always ready in their palms, hours upon hours were spent flipping fingers over the tops of record covers, digging through crates like they contained the Holy Grail – sometimes, they did.

Vinyl, Art and Leisure attempts to revive some of this fading vibe; the pop up record shop and listening party pairs the sociable and passionate aspects of music store culture in the first event of its kind in the city. Continue reading:

Delhi 2 Dublin was a happy accident born out of Vancouver’s Celtic Fest in 2006. Their sound started as an electronic fusion between bhangra beats and Celtic fiddle and has since grown into anything from dub reggae to breakbeats to just straight up happy dance music. File under… best.

Founded by Tarun Nayar (of Beats Without Borders cred), Sanjay Seran (at the time hailing from live bhangra act Signia), and Ravi Binning (a professionally trained bhangra dancer and dhol player), it was obvious D2D had something people wanted. Continue reading:
