If you’ve noticed big groups of runners trotting through the streets of Vancouver the last few weeks, there’s a good reason.

The Vancouver Sun Run, Canada’s biggest 10K race, is Sunday, April 19. Each spring, around 50,000 runners – from world-class athletes to moms and dads pushing strollers – line up for the dash through downtown Vancouver. Now in it’s 31st year, the Sun Run has become a seasonal rite of passage for Vancouverites, with groups of friends and coworkers training for weeks (sometimes months) in advance of the big race.

The first ever Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series event is coming to Vancouver, Oct. 26. Featuring both a 10K and a half-marathon, the event is equal parts live music party and road race.

Along each mile of the course, bands are on hand to pump up runners.  Music ranges from rock and soul to jazz, blues and even punk. Dozens of live music groups in total transform the race into a giant dance party.  (In fact, local bands are being recruited shortly, if you’d like to rock out in front of thousands of runners and fans).

Looking for a way to work off some Thanksgiving calories?  Put down that drumstick and head to Granville Island on Monday, Oct. 8, for the annual Turkey Trot 10K.

Now in its 14th year, the Turkey Trot is defined as a “run/walk/stroll.”  In other words, if you don’t feel like sprinting after a weekend of stuffing your face with pumpkin pie and mashed potatoes, then you don’t have to.  The unique race is equal parts competition and family get-together.  There’s even a special Tot Trot, where moms and dads can push junior in a stroller.

The Turky Trot route itself, which circles False Creek, seems more like sightseeing than road racing. Continue reading:
