Summer is running season in Vancouver, and it is with some personal irony that this month’s wellness events list is mostly run related.  The reason I say this is because I am not a runner. At all. But that’s the beauty of Vancouver, there’s something for everyone. And for my fellow non-runners, don’t worry, there’s some fun outdoor activities happening for us as well!

Vancouver Has a Horse Track?

Among Vancouver’s must-sees, one place that almost never gets mentioned is the old Hastings Racecourse, squirreled away next to the Playland amusement park.   Maybe it’s because horse racing has a bit of a seedy rep.  Or maybe it’s the location, out on the edge of town.  Whatever the reason, it’s a shame because a day at the races is a lot of fun.

I checked out the Racecourse for the first time on a recent Sunday. I’d never been to a race before and wasn’t sure what to expect.  My first big surprise: It’s free to watch.  You can just wander right into the racetrack area: No tickets, not even any security.

Chip’s NOT dead yet, so look alive, Vancouver!

chipThe following are two lessons I’ve learned in the past 5 years:
1) Vancouverites are extremely passionate about their local community.
2) Life’s greatest memories often occur in costume.

Odd pair, I know, but they are complimentary lessons in the case of Chip’s Not Dead Yet! Dubbed as “The Funnest Charity Race Alive,” Chip’s Not Dead Yet is a BC Children’s Hospital Fundraiser that expects to bring together approximately 5000 people on Saturday June 20th for themed races, live entertainment, a beer garden, and the summer’s biggest street party! Not to mention the prizes! Ohh, the prizes.
