With just one week to go until Christmas, Vancouver’s biggest holiday attractions and shows are in full swing. It’s also likely at this point that you’ve already spent the majority of your holiday budget. Here’s a list of 5 free holiday events and activities that will make your season brighter, without having an impact on your credit card statement.

1. Trinity Street Christmas Light Festival, through January 6
All neighbourhoods have a little glitter but Trinity Street goes all out. Their annual festival of lights blazes from the 2400 block to the 2900 block with residents competing for the most holiday cheer. Learn more from their Facebook page.

2. Heritage Christmas at Burnaby Village Museum, through January 4
The open-air Burnaby Village Museum – where the 1920s come to life – is decked out in a dazzling Christmas lights. Take in traditional sights, sounds and tastes of Christmas past with the family: shimmering Winter Wonderland at the Love Farmhouse, Angel Bridge Crossing, Holiday Lane and a whopper of a Christmas tree by the vintage carousel. There’s also story book scenes, scavenger hunts, and a special seasonal display by the Miniature Club of BC. Carousel rides cost money, but you only have to pony up $2.30. Continue reading:

1) Grouse Mountain’s Peak of Christmas, ongoing through Dec. 24
Walk in a winter wonderland a thousand metres above the city at Grouse’s annual holiday celebration, Peak of Christmas. The festivities include Santa’s workshop, an 8,000-square-foot outdoor skating pond, real reindeer, sleigh rides, Christmas choirs – all set against an alpine backdrop. The Peak of Christmas is in included in the price of an Alpine Experience Ticket ($39.95 for adults, $35.95 for seniors, $23.95 for youth 13-18, $13.95 for children 5-12).

2) Bright Nights – Stanley Park Christmas Train, ongoing through Jan. 1
Come on, it’s lovely weather for a train ride together. Parents of small kiddos consider Bright Nights to be one of the most enjoyable Vancouver holiday traditions. But make no mistake, grown-ups will melt like Frosty in summer over the view of 2 million twinkly lights illuminating Vancouver’s 1000-acre Stanley Park, visible as you ride the park’s Mini Train.
