Hudson’s Bay Co. is rolling out new smartphone technology at five Canadian stores, including a Vancouver location, according to the Vancouver Sun.  The location-sensing technology will blast special offers to consumers depending on exactly where they’re standing in the store.  The special sensors can also track the overall location of shoppers to better understand buying behaviours.

The Bay joins American Apparel as one of the first Canadian retailers to embrace the new location-sensing technology.   Continue reading:

Vancouver Boxing Day sales start early on the web

True, pre-Christmas sales have been building steam for the last few years, but nothing beats Boxing Day price slashing. Sales start Dec. 26, one of the most frenzied shopping days of the year, and continue through the end of the week.

For many, the day after Christmas is about squeezing in one more Scrabble victory against your little brother, or catching a family movie. For others, Christmas presents are just an amuse bouche before the main shopping meal Dec. 26.

Designer expat Erdem returns to launch collection at The Bay

Erdem for The Room at The Bay

How do you get an eminent fashion designer who just won Most Influential Womenswear Designer at the 2011 Global Fashion Awards to drop by Vancouver and have a chat? It helps if he’s Canadian. It also helps if he’s designed an exclusive capsule collection launching at The Room, the sleek new boutique in The Bay.

I sat down with Erdem Moralioglu—known by his first name alone—to talk about his design inspiration. I also wanted to probe his thoughts on Vancouver style, since this city was so recently panned as the third-worst dressed city in the world by MSN Travel. I knew this Canadian-born, London-based fashion visionary would have some worthwhile insight. After all, his graceful yet modern clothing has won plaudits for its combo of sharp tailoring with romanticism, and bold custom-designed silk prints. The Erdem look appeals to all women, from the prime minister’s wife to celebs like Keira and Gwyneth.

Erdem adjusted his chic librarian specs, sipped his Diet Coke and talked style. Here’s what he had to say:

Top 5 2010 souvenirs from budget to big-time

The Bay at Georgia and Granville, home of the Olympic SuperstoreThe other night at the 2010 Olympic Superstore at the Bay downtown it occurred to me they might soon need to recruit a few air traffic controllers from YVR to manage the traffic in the aisles.

Clearly the world has arrived and IT IS READY TO SHOP!

The scene was reminiscent of the door-crasher sales of my childhood at now-defunct department stores such as Eaton’s and Woodward’s: people pulling sizes out of other people’s hands; clothes being tried on in front of mirrors and then flung helter-skelter over nearby racks; clerks frantically searching for sizes amidst the dwindling stock.

I stood in line with my “official” red Canada hoodie–a new shipment came and went in a matter of minutes–and watched  as greeters quickly redirected shoppers to their souvenir-of-choice: pins? To your left. Red mitts? To your right. The designer-chic point blanket merino wool sweater recently featured in the local fashion pages? In the specialty section.
