Happy Halloweek, witches! The veil thins, the spooky events are piling up, and this weekend is the time to pull on your creepiest costumes and haunt the city with festive fright.
Happy Equinox! This weekend day and night will be nearly equal all around the world and Autumn will officially begin. Appreciate the start of pumpkin spice season by having your heart melted by the Aquarium’s rescued otters, going on a walk to spy on this season’s birds, enjoying a moon festival, or checking out a sculpture exhibit full of grotesque human-animal hybrids.
Post-long-weekend September is off to a solid start. The Skookum Festival will be filling Stanley Park with music, art, and food, the Fringe Festival is bringing all kinds of quirky theatrics onto and around Granville Island, and there’s a huge Gran Fondo bike ride up the scenic Sea to Sky highway to Whistler.
Here it is – the last weekend of August! It looks like we’ll be getting some much needed showers, so get out and enjoy the refreshing summer rain with a 5K run in a park, a festival on nearby Bowen Island, a walk along the waterfront to the Bird Expo, or watch the skies at the beach and then stroll through one of Vancouver’s many neighbourhoods.

Outdoor music season is here, and this weekend you can catch symphony to swoon to, hip hop to groove to, Latin American to swing to and local music to discover in parks (and atop a mountain) throughout the Vancouver area. There’s also a dance festival and a brunch festival. That’s right – a brunch festival.
You can start this weekend with an adult beverage in-hand at a Playland with absolutely no children to dodge, then plan to wander into a pocket of the Jazz Festival – watch for their shows and free concerts across the city. Meander along False Creek where dragon boaters will be colorfully competing to live entertainment and family-friendly activities and, to top it all off, take your pick of a drag show for charity, two races (one up a mountain), a basketball game and/or a film festival to round out the days.
It’s a good weekend to be a kid; the International Children’s Festival is on, there’s a ballet production of Cinderella and an adventure playground pop-up. Or you can re-live some childhood memories with comedians recalling high school stories and a production of music from the Final Fantasy games.
