How bout them apples: UBC Apple Fest Oct. 15-16

It’s time to plan your weekend agenda. If it feels like the weekend just ended, that’s the beauty of a four-day work week. Top on the list of Vancouver happenings is the 21st annual UBC Apple Festival, taking place Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 15 and 16, from 11:00 am-4:00 pm in the university botanical gardens.

The festival celebrates the 200+ varieties of apples grown locally with tastings, baked goods, games and even how-to-graft lessons for gardeners. No one leaves without a sack fruit. Every year at this family-friendly event, fest-goers purchase 44,000 pounds or 20,000 kilos of B.C. apples.

UBC: An Olympic Neighbourhood

Thunderbird Arena at UBC

As host to one of the Vancouver 2010 Official Olympic Venues, University of British Columbia (UBC) is one of Vancouver’s “Olympic Neighbourhoods,” and a fabulous place to explore if you want a day off from the downtown crowds.

UBC is home to the Thunderbird Arena, one of the ice hockey and sledge hockey venues for the 2010 Games.

UBC Apple Festival – October 17-18

Apple Festival
For apple loves not yet sated from one too many slices of apple pie this past Thanksgiving weekend, there is nothing more anticipated than the annual UBC Apple Festival, October 17th and 18th, at the UBC Botanical Garden.

This family-friendly celebration of the apple offers many fabulous apple-related fun activities for everyone to enjoy. You can taste more than 50 varieties of apples, or sample other apple-related food items, such as cider, chips, pie and (my favorite) caramel apples. You can view and purchase one of the many varieties of apple trees for planting in your own garden, and discuss pruning and disease management strategies with Master Gardeners. Also available are tours of the UBC Farm Heritage Orchard. There is a children’s activity area, lively musical entertainment, and kids 12 and under are free.

The Apple Festival is very popular with the locals, so get there early! For more information, click here.
