The Fall Arts season is upon us, so we thought we’d turn the spotlight on some local dance extravaganzas. We’ve got a local legend, a daring company from France and a provocative work by a European choreographer that will haunt your dreams. Read on.
This year’s Dancing on the Edge showcases over 30 performances. From July 5-14, more than 30 choreographers, and dozens of artists from across Canada, from Belgium and South Korea, will dance on Vancouver stages and in the streets. Programs are full-length and mixed-bill, and some are site-specific works.
This is the 30th annual edition of the festival. See below for more info on some of the performers coming to the event.

Dancing on the Edge celebrates 30 years of contemporary dance in Vancouver
12 Minutes Max showcases five eclectic dance works by some of Vancouver’s most exciting and innovative up-and-coming choreographers.
First launched in Vancouver in 1994, the showcase supports the development of new works throughout the season. The 42nd edition takes place June 15, beginning at 8 p.m. See below for more info on what to expect from this exciting dance showcase at Scotiabank Dance Centre (677 Davie St.).

Local choreographers strut their (new) stuff at 12 Minutes Max this Friday
Toronto Dance Theatre is one of Canada’s foremost dance companies. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Vancouver’s DanceHouse is bringing a showcase of the company’s work to the Vancouver Playhouse (600 Hamilton St.) on Feb. 23 and 24 (details below).

Toronto Dance Theatre brings eclectic, career-spanning program to Vancouver
The students of Luciterra Dance Company are putting on a show.
The East Vancouver-based school’s annual winter student showcase, The White Raven Revue, takes place this Sunday, Dec. 17, at the Rickshaw Theatre (254 E. Hastings St.). The students have been working on their routines for the past four months.
We asked co-director Nikki Mae to tell us more about the show and the company.

Dance students, instructors showcase their work this Sunday in White Raven Revue
Tickets go on sale today (Dec. 13) for the 18th Annual Chutzpah! Festival. Organizers have also announced the lineup for the festival, aka the Lisa Nemetz International Jewish Performing Arts Festival. The arts festival takes place Feb. 15-March 15 2018 at various venues, including the Norman Rothstein Theatre, Scotiabank Dance Centre, Rickshaw Theatre, and Fox Cabaret.
One of the highlights of the annual event is its Dance Series. This year’s Chutzpah! features some of the most sought-after contemporary choreographers in the world, along with theatre, comedy and music. Here are some highlights.

18th Annual Chutzpah! Festival lineup announced
Since its unveiling last year, the made-in-Vancouver dance piece Betroffenheit has met with universal acclaim.
Earlier this year, as part of its 2017/18, DanceHouse announced three more performances in March. All three have sold-out, and now the presenter has added a fourth show on March 14. Tickets for additional performance, at Vancouver Playhouse (600 Hamilton St.) go on sale tomorrow, Friday Dec. 8, at 10 a.m.
