2013 Vancouver Tweed Ride Announced

bikesOld-timey bicycles.  Vintage tweed clothing.  Handlebar moustaches.

The annual Vancouver Tweed Ride is back.  Details have just been announced for the unique “group bicycle ride through the centre of Vancouver,” scheduled for Sept. 15.  The one-of-a-kind event, which was started in 2010, encourages cyclists to dress in traditional British cycling attire – in other words, tweed and lots of it.

The goal of the event is to recreate the spirit of a bygone era of refined cycling, while also bringing attention to the importance of urban biking in Vancouver.  Any bicycle is acceptable for the road, but vintage bicycles – the older the better – are highly encouraged (No word if the event will accept penny farthings, the early bikes with the giant front wheel and tiny back one). A blast from the past: check out this retro Vancouver video clip

My friend and fellow travel writer Randall Shirley posted a vintage newsreel clip about Vancouver on Facebook and it’s too fun not to share further afield.

Sorry I couldn’t make it appear here–embedding iFrames in a WordPress post is beyond my skill set–but this link will take you directly there: Rockies Flight to Vancouver.

Vancouver was evidently quite the hottie in her youth–but she’s definitely aging well! Enjoy the trip down memory lane…
