Jazz on the Mountain at Whistler September 2 – 4, 2011

Looking for a quick, easy weekend getaway this Labour Day weekend? Head up to Whistler for Canada’s newest jazz festival, Jazz on the Mountain at Whistler: three days of free and ticketed concerts from top international and Canadian jazz musicians.

The inaugural Jazz on the Mountain festival features daily outdoor concerts at the Whistler Olympic Plaza that include jazz greats Kevin Eubanks, Stanley Jordan, Oliver Jones, The New Gary Burton Quartet, and Spyro Gyra and The Rippingtons, as well as nightly “Jazz Jams” (from 10pm to 1am) at The Mallard Lounge at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler.

Summer in Sun Peaks: Mountain Biking, Golf, Canoeing & More

When I told my friends I was spending a weekend in Sun Peaks, everyone responded with “Ooh, I can’t wait to hear all about it.” Though many Vancouverites have been to Sun Peaks Resort in winter for its famous skiing and snow sports (unlike Whistler, Sun Peaks boasts no wait times for lifts), fewer have been there in the summer. So everyone was wondering—myself included—just what is there to do in Sun Peaks without the snow?

The answer, I found, is practically every outdoor summer sport we love: golfing, canoeing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding. Add to all that a charming alpine village that’s packed with delicious restaurants, safe for kids and dogs, and a super-short walk from all the sports amenities, and you have the ideal getaway to the B.C. interior.

On the Train: Vancouver to Seattle & Beyond on the Amtrak Cascades Train

If you’re looking for a weekend mini-break, or a way to combine a trip to Vancouver with a trip to the U.S., why not hop on the scenic Amtrak Cascades train and head to Seattle for a few days? The train takes about four hours to make the journey from Vancouver to Seattle and the whole trip is lovely: Gorgeous views of the Pacific Northwest coast, perfect in any weather. (I actually find it more romantic when it’s grey and moody.)
