Want to see 150 bands in one night, for free?

Make Music Vancouver, the crowdsourced music fest, is back for its third edition on June 21. For one night, the streets of Gastown – every last curb, doorway and plaza – will be filled with 150 local acts performing everything from rock and reggae to classical, jazz and punk.

For music lovers, and anyone into raw, unbridled creativity, it’s an auditory and visual feast: sometimes messy, sometimes inspiring, always entertaining.

From a distance, all you hear is a cacophony of cymbals, booming bass and a chorus of dozens of different voices. Up close, however, each act comes into its own. Continue reading:

200 Bands for Free: Make Music Vancouver, June 21

Ready to kick off summer with a ton of free, live music?

On June 21, the first day of summer, Make Music Vancouver will transform Gastown’s Water Street into one, huge outdoor concert with dozens of different sidewalk stages (Editor’s Note: This event has also been expanded into Yaletown this year). The event, which runs from 5 p.m.-10 p.m., was inaugurated in Vancouver last year and attracted 20,000 people and 150 bands. This year, organizers are expecting 200 bands.

200 bands in one evening? That’s right. And the reason it’s possible is because Make Music is unlike any festival you’ve ever been to.

20 Unmissable Vancouver Events in June 2012

June escorts in the official start of summer and the packed line up of events, from concerts to street parties and festivals, reflects the city’s overwhelming urge to get out and have fun.

I’m particularly looking forward to the line-up for Italian Heritage Month, including the EuroCup Breakfast and Commercial’s Italian Day on the Drive – one of the largest community events of the year dedicated to celebrating la dolce vita with food, music, entertainment and more.

But the street parties don’t stop there. Expect mass community participation and entertainment during Car Free Days, Velopalooza bike fest and Make Music Vancouver – a remarkable, free concert where 200 musicians take to the historic Gastown and Yaletown streets.

The annual Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival (pictured above) puts Vancouver on the world map with its longstanding tradition of vibrant multicultural heritage and, of course, vigorous boat racing. Venus makes a rare trek across the heavens this month. Get out and watch; the next opportunity is 100 years away. Oh and Bryan Adams is bringing his old school, sexy-scratchy vocals to town.

On June 21, 2011, the Fête de la Musique comes to Vancouver for the first time.

From the streets, buildings, and alleyways – on June 21, Gastown will be transformed and resonate with music for Vancouver’s inaugural Fete de la Musique. Presented locally by the association Français du Monde à Vancouver in partnership with the Alliance Française – Fete de la Musique is a worldwide, admission-free, grassroots event celebrating music, and features both amateur and professional artists of diverse musical backgrounds.
