This weekend, mindblowing rock ‘n’ roll bands and experimental music acts take over the city for the second Levitation Vancouver music festival.

The Vancouver edition grew out of the Austin-based Levitation festival, itself originally called the Austin Psych Fest. The idea behind Levitation is to bring together acts from all over the world with a taste for adventurous sounds. Local punk act White Lung, Spanish buzz band HINDS and acclaimed experimental Los Angeles producer Flying Lotus are just a few of the reasons to check out Levitation Vancouver this weekend (June 16-19). See below for more.

Shabazz Palaces – Seattle’s Sub Pop label is famous for being the home of grunge and, in more recent years, smart indie-rock and pop. Shabazz Palaces is the label’s first hip-hop signing. The group is the brainchild of Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler, originally from the ’90s hip-hop act Digable Planets, and Tendai Maraire, son of the famous mbira player Dumisani Maraire. In 2014, the duo released the second Shabazz Palaces studio album, Lese Majesty. The Seattle weekly called the album “the future of hiphop.” At the Imperial (319 Main St.) June 18.

Cherry Glazerr – The LA-based garage-pop trio specializes in fuzzy guitar hooks and snarling vocals. The band’s attitude is best exemplified in tracks like “White’s Not My Color This Evening” and “Had Ten Dollaz“. At the Commodore Ballroom (868 Granville St.) June 18.

Suuns – Ominous vocals, dissonant noise and indie rock guitars come together in Suuns. The Montreal band’s latest album, Hold/Still, is receiving positive reviews. At the Rickshaw (254 E. Hastings St.), June 17.

Nothing – Domenic Palermo formed the Philadelphia shoegaze band in 2011, after a lengthy hiatus from music that included two years’ time for a stabbing. The band’s latest, Tired of Tomorrow, was just released and received a coveted 8 (out of 10) from online music tastemaking publication pitchfork.com. At the Cobalt (917 Main St.) June 18.

Heron Oblivion – The San Francisco band features members of indie-rock groups like Espers, Comets on Fire, Howlin’ Rain, and Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound. The result is ,according to the band’s bio, “a mesmeric compilation of English folk rock and earthy West Coast psychedelia spiked with feedback and explosive dissonant elements.” Seattle’s Sub Pop label released the band’s full-length debut in March. At the Cobalt June 17.
