Five bands to see at this year’s International Pop Overthrow Festival in Vancouver

Psyche-rock act The Top Boost are among the 20 acts playing this year’s International Pop Overthrow (Aug. 30-Sept 1).

Vancouver has two big music festivals coming up in September: Skookum and Westward. (Watch this blog for more details.) Before that, though, there’s a smaller but no less vital music fest that sees multi-act lineups of lesser-known but talented local (mostly) acts playing one stage over four nights.

Now in its 13th year in Vancouver, The International Pop Overthrow Festival returns to the Fairview Pub (898 W. Broadway) Aug. 30-Sept. 1. The festival features 20 pop and rock bands, from Vancouver and beyond, and for only $10 a show.

See below for some of the highlights.

We Found A Lovebird (Friday, Aug. 31)—Larry Lechner, formerly of Vancouver bands The Velveteens and Conrad, is the frontman for indie-rock/pop band We Found a Lovebird. The band released its full-length debut, Lobby, in 2016. Listen to the band’s song “Mess We Call the West” here.

Previous releases have seen comparisons to Television, Kinks, Wilco, Elvis Costello, Modern Lovers, The Jam, but with the release of ‘Lobby’, We Found a Lovebird may finally claim a place in the fragmented Vancouver Music scene.

Gold Stars Are for Suckers (Aug. 31)—Accoring to the band’s bio, “Gold Stars Are For Suckers draw upon many different genres of music. Thrown into the musical melting pot, we play anything to dirty power pop (a la Ramones, Pixies and the Stones) to catchy dancy, bottom-heavy grooves. You know Gold Stars Are For Suckers will always blow any crowd away with their straight ahead rock and roll fun show!”

Dave Rave & Hailee Rose (Aug. 31)—Rave is a former member of legendary Canadian new wave/post-punk band Teenage Head. Hailee Rose is Rave’s performing/touring partner and a singer/songwriter in her own right.

Siobhan DuVall (Saturday, Sept. 1)—A member of one of Vancouver’s first all-female punk bands, The Bombshells, DuVall is known for her Blondie-esque power-pop.

Local power-pop singer Siobhan Duvall plays this year’s International Pop Overthrow Festival at the Fairview Pub.

The Top Boost (Sept. 1)—According to the band’s bio, The Top Boost is “Vancouver’s premier (and only) psychedelic power pop trio. They combine catchy melodies and vocal harmonies informed by classic ’60s groups like The Beatles, The Byrds, and The Zombies. They add a touch of bubblegum pop sweetness, then filter it through the loud guitars and showmanship of ’70s glitter rock.”
