Brewers go cask-to-cask at this year’s Caskapalooza

Cask ale or cask-conditioned beer is unfiltered and unpasteurised beer served without additional nitrogen or carbon dioxide pressure. In the UK, where they can be snobs about such things, cask ale is also sometimes referred to as “real ale.”

For the third year, Vancouver breweries are getting in on the cask action. On Aug. 21, local brewers will present 36 casks at Caskapalooza 2018. Vancouver Craft Beer Market, 85 W. 1st Ave. in Olympic Village, is hosting the tasting from 4-8 p.m.

Here’s a look at some of the breweries taking part.

Backcountry Brewing—This Squamish brewery opened in 2017. At the BC Beer Awards later that year Backcountry took home five awards, including 1st place for its Trailbreaker Pale Ale and Best New Brewery in the province.

East Van Brewing Company—Another fairly new brewery, EVBC will be at Caskapalooza with its Picklebuck—a brew infused with Kaylin and Hobbs Kosher Pickle brine.

Faculty—While beer and yoga may seem antithetical, rest assured that they’re not—at least, at Faculty. Each Saturday morning, the brewery (at 1830 Ontario) hosts Après Om, a yoga gathering offered by a collective of yoga teachers. The collective is “keen on developing community by pairing their craft with post-yoga connection through conversation.” Mats and Faculty beverage (one drink per ticket) provided. Doors open at 9 a.m., class starts at 930 a.m.

Faculty hosts Saturday morning yoga, followed by a glass of beer. Oh, and the brewery will represent at this year’s Caskapalooza.

R&B Brewing—One of the city’s oldest breweries, R&B has been serving suds to thirsty locals and visitors since 1997. At a recent BC Beer Awards, its Vancouver Special IPA was named the best IPA. Its taproom at 54 E. 4th has one of the most varied selections of beers in town.

Strange Fellows—This East Van brewery, known for its tarts, sours, and saisons, will soon introduce its gin gose (a beer made with at least 50% malted wheat) to its Clark Drive tap room. A version that has been cask-conditioned with lemon peel will debut at Caskapalooza.

Along with unique brews from local brewers, the event includes a chance to win a Whistler Village Beer Festival Prize Pack for four. Partial proceeds will be donated to Make-A-Wish Foundation BC & Yukon.
