Beautiful—The Carole King Musical will premiere in Vancouver at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre Nov. 13-18.

Long before she was Carole King, she was Carol Klein, a Brooklyn girl with a passion for music. By the time she was in her twenties King already had a husband, Gerry Goffin (also a songwriter) and a flourishing career writing hits for some of the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll. The two were in friendly competition with another songwriting team, Cynthia Weil and composer Barry Mann. In 1971, King released Tapestry, which would go on to become one of the decade’s biggest, and most influential, albums.
Beautiful—The Carole King Musical features songs by both Goffin/King and Mann/Weil, including “I Feel The Earth Move,” “One Fine Day,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “You’ve Got A Friend” and the title song.
For the touring production with Broadway Across Canada, the cast features Sarah Bockel as King. According to a review in the Chicago Tribune, “… even if you saw the show on its previous long Chicago engagement, Bockel’s intensely emotional interpretation of King and her music is ample reason to return.” Tony and Academy Award-nominee Douglas McGrath wrote the book. The jukebox musical opened on Broadway at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in January 2014. It has since broken all box office records at the theatre to become the highest grossing production in its history. Beautiful launched its first US National Tour in September 2015, and had a successful run in London’s West End that year as well.
The Original Broadway Cast Recording of Beautiful—The Carole King Musical won the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
