Piaf! The Show comes to Vancouver

Anne Carrere as Piaf.

Piaf! The Show has sold more than a million tickets in more than 50 countries and garnered positive reviews worldwide. On Tues., March 19, the musical celebration of the life and music of legendary French chanteuse Edith Piaf, who died in 1963, comes to Vancouver’s Chan Shun Concert Hall.

Playing Piaf is Anne Carrere, a young French performer who has been hailed as the singer’s “legitimate musical heiress.” Conceived and directed by the Nice-based Gil Marsalla, the show was inspired by the award-winning movie La Vie En Rose (2007, with Marion Cotillard as Piaf) and premiered in 2015.

In two 45-minute acts, the show narrates the rags-to-riches story of the Parisian singer’s career through her music. From early songs to her greatest hits, the show complements the songs with previously unreleased photographs and images of famous Parisian locations of the Piaf era. From the streets of Montmartre during the time of “La Vie en Rose” (her best-known song, released in 1947), to Parisian cafes, to the world’s great concert stages, Piaf! takes the audience on a journey. The show also features a four-piece live band.

Gil Marsalla, producer and director of Piaf! The Show, met future star Anne Carrere in 2014, when she auditioned for another of his productions (Paris! The Show). According to a media release, Marsalla was “captivated by her skills and natural charisma” and offered her the role of Edith Piaf in his new production. “Equally impressed with Carrere were Piaf’s longtime collaborators, composer Charles Dumont, Ginou Richer, Piaf’s personal secretary, and singer Germaine Ricord, who described Anne’s skills as ‘that of Edith Piaf at the top of her career.’”
