Lumière Set to Transform Vancouver into a Vivid Display of Illumination this November

Now in its eighth year, Lumière will light up various Vancouver neighbourhoods once again in spectacular fashion. Lumière runs from November 12 – 30, with the illuminated installations best viewed after sunset. Lumière will showcase a range of interactive art installations adding sparkle and excitement to four iconic sites: English Bay, Jim Deva Plaza, Granville Island and Bentall Centre in Downtown Vancouver.

Lumière is excited to announce the addition of a new art installation to English Bay, a dazzling 12-foot-tall beaver, that will join Davie, Luna, Stanley and Eugenia. The beaver’s name will be chosen by the public prior to the event’s launch. Select installations will remain on display until February 2022 to be enjoyed nightly. “Lumière has always held a vision of connecting with other light festivals around the world, and this year, we are delighted to be working with the Portland Winter Light Festival on an exchange program. We will be hosting artist Fez BeGaetz and his giant Sunflower, ‘Helianthus Enorme’, at our event in Vancouver and, in January our orca Luna will head south to Portland bringing with her some Vancouver sparkles. We look forward to growing this partnership and facilitating the flow of creativity and art” says Shelley Hayashi, President of Lumière.

Jim Deva Plaza is set to host two new mesmerizing art installations. ‘Helianthus Enorme’, the sunflower from Portland standing at more than 25-feet-tall, is inspired by the geometric patterns of seeds in the disk floret. The location’s second art installation, known as ‘Twin Harmonic Amplified Neuro-Knowledge Stimulator’ (T.H.A.N.K.S.), is designed to amplify feelings of gratitude. The bright colours are reminiscent of sunsets, sweet treats, and daydreams.

Lumière is thrilled to announce the expansion of the 2021 event, with new illuminated art installations located in Downtown Vancouver and on Granville Island.

Bentall Centre is home to ‘Parasol’, one-of-a-kind mushroom-like structures that fuse nature and innovative light design to reignite onlookers’ sense of wonder. Each of the five, nine-foot-tall sculptures contains 40 fins to mimic the underbelly of a mushroom. Parasol will take on a new life when animated with colourful patterns that react to music providing an exceptional visual experience for visitors enjoying the patio in the evening.

Additionally, on the Dunsmuir Patio at Bentall Centre, ‘Canopy Lights’ a 55 LED string light structure will allow people to see their voice translated to light patterns creating an immersive light and sound experience to interact with the canopy in a whole new way. Downtown Vancouver’s third installation, ‘Chromatic Blocks’ on the Burrard Benches, invites guests to get lost in light and colour when physically immersing yourself inside the cubes to explore a stunning gradient visual.

Located on Granville Island, ‘A Beacon of Light’, adds colour and light to the Courtyard of the Public Market. This 12-pointed, 22-foot-tall illuminated star shines bright enough to be spotted from the West End. Alongside this is the 14-foot-tall ‘Alder Bay Star’ which dazzles as it hangs off Granville Island’s furthest point of land.

Throughout the month of November, Lumière will create a fun and festive atmosphere that can be safely enjoyed by individuals, families, and small bubble groups of friends.
