What’s All the Racquet? Vancouver Named as Host City for Laver Cup 2023!

The Laver Cup will head to Vancouver in 2023, with the renowned sporting city set to stage the dynamic team tournament at the Rogers Arena from September 22-24, 2023.

“Our dream for the Laver Cup was to bring together the world’s top players – rivals year-round – as teammates, to honor the great legends of the past and bring spectacular and competitive tennis to new destinations,” Laver Cup Chairman and CEO of Team8 Tony Godsick said.

“With the fifth Laver Cup taking place in London in September, and our announcement today that Laver Cup will come to Vancouver in 2023, we are well on our way to realizing our vision for what is now a hugely popular event on the tennis calendar.”

The Laver Cup honors tennis legend Rod Laver, the only man to win two calendar-year Grand Slams. Rod Laver’s rich history includes playing an exhibition match with fellow Australian John Newcombe at the Stanley Park tennis courts in 1970. He returned to Vancouver in 1972 to compete in the Rothmans Canadian Open.

“We are excited to see the Laver Cup come to Canada in 2023 and are delighted that Vancouver has been chosen to showcase the Europe versus the rest of the World team competition,” President and CEO of Tennis Canada Michael Downey said.

“This will be the first time the World team, which includes Canada, will host the Laver Cup outside the United States. Vancouver is a great tennis city and one of the world’s top tourism destinations so a most worthy choice for the prestigious Laver Cup.

“Hosting international tennis events such as the Laver Cup always brings a tremendous amount of excitement to our sport and, as a result, creates a lasting impact on the development of our sport.”

Laver Cup CEO Steve Zacks, who forged the agreement with local officials, believes Vancouver will provide a perfect stage for the event.

“We’re delighted to bring the Laver Cup to the West Coast for the very first time in 2023, and to Vancouver, which is renowned for hosting major sporting events,” Zacks said.

“This is a city which clearly loves tennis and has a strong participation in the sport. Rogers Arena is one of the premier sports and entertainment facilities in all of North America and is the perfect fit for a global tennis event like the Laver Cup, which has been a sellout competition since 2017.”

“Hosting some of the games’ best players at Rogers Arena is a huge honor and we look forward to offering up a world class experience for the fans who come to watch all the incredible action on the court,” said Michael Doyle, President, Business Operations, Canucks Sports & Entertainment.

The City of Vancouver, with its Sport Hosting Vancouver partnership, has hosted numerous international events including the 2018 Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final, 2019 World Junior Hockey Championships, 2019 Olympic Volleyball Qualifier and the annual World Rugby Sevens. It was recently named a FIFA World Cup 2026 Host City and host of the 2025 Invictus Games.

“We are so proud to be named amongst the prestigious past host destinations of the Laver Cup, and we cannot wait to share our unique West Coast Canadian hospitality with all who travel here in 2023 to witness world-class tennis,” City of Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart said.

“Vancouver is the perfect destination for this event, guaranteed to leave the players and spectators with renewed inspiration and a lifetime of memories. Thank you the Laver Cup for believing in Vancouver, we look forward to 2023.”

“Seeing the world’s best players meet on court here in Vancouver brings a whole new level of tennis to our city,” President and CEO of Destination Vancouver Royce Chwin said.

“Vancouver is raising our game in attracting top tier sporting events to our city and the Laver Cup is another exceptional competition to add to the schedule. Rod Laver last played competitively here in 1972 and it will be thrilling to see him back here.”

The three-day Laver Cup competition pits six of the best players from Team Europe, captained by tennis legend Bjorn Borg, against six leading players from Team World, led by Borg’s professional rival, John McEnroe.
