Rugby Sevens

For those unfamiliar, “Sevens” is a fast-paced, shorter version of traditional rugby with only seven players per side. Sevens matches consist of two halves of seven minutes with a two-minute half-time break. This means more hard-hitting action and frequent scoring.

Rugby sevens has quickly built up a massive international audience that attracts large crowds around the world. For the 2024 edition, all 64 matches will be open to the public, with each of the three days featuring thrilling sevens action, fancy dress, and an electrifying crowd in a welcoming atmosphere for both rugby fans and non-sports fans alike.

On this leg of the new HSBC SVNS Series, the tournament will see 12 women’s and 12 men’s teams, including both Canada’s Women’s and Men’s Sevens Teams, vying for the title of Vancouver Sevens champion!

Fancy Dress

What is known as “fancy dress” is one of the weirder and more fun rugby sevens traditions. No matter where you are in the world, you will spot large groups dressed in bizarre costumes with absolutely no connection to the sport.

It’s a longstanding sevens tradition to dress up with your group in matching elaborate outfits, silly comical costumes, or other random-themed apparel. Show off your creativity by organizing group costumes that may or may not actually reflect Vancouver, BC, Canada (think lumberjacks, fishermen, or beavers), or really any theme you want!

Remember to keep costumes safe and appropriate for everyone to enjoy by checking the costume guidelines beforehand.

Weekend Fun

Vancouver Sevens goes beyond rugby as a chance for your group to make it a lighthearted, fun-filled weekend-long activity. Be sure to celebrate pre- or post-game at one of the many bars and restaurants in and around the Stadium District.

In keeping with the sports theme, sports bars good for large groups walkable from the action at BC Place include The SportsBar, Red Card Sports Bar, Shark Club, The Pint, GoodCo Bar, Dublin Calling, Craft Beer Market, Tap & Barrel, Steamworks Brew Pub, The Blarney Stone, The Cordova Bar, or Greta.

You can also take the opportunity to explore walkable surrounding neighbourhoods like Gastown, False Creek, Olympic Village, and Chinatown or even take the Aquabus from Granville Island for some great views of the city.
