If you want to catch some of North America’s best cyclists in action, check out BC Superweek. From July 5-14 the Vancouver area hosts nine different pro cycling races in six different communities. Each race has a slightly different format, but they all take place on local streets so they’re free to watch. The racing gets pretty exciting as the athletes can hit speeds of up to 70kph! Plus, many of the races have fun extras like kids events, live music, or beer gardens.
There are two main types of races in the series. A criterium is a race where riders do laps around the same short circuit, jockeying for position. There is a lot of sprinting. (Tip: If you want to sound like a pro, call it a “crit”.) The road race is more of an endurance event where the cyclists race a longer course. Both are pretty fun to watch. Here’s a full listing of all the races you can check out.

BC Superweek: Watch Pro Cycling in Vancouver
On busy weekends, while shoppers flock to Metrotown in Burnaby, I usually set my sights a little further down the road to Central Park, a 90-hectare oasis nestled on the Vancouver – Burnaby border. This lush, coastal urban rainforest and park is home to thousands of native trees and shrubs including towering douglas fir, western hemlock, cedar, poplar and maple. Numerous trails wind their way through the forest past ponds, inviting park visitors to go green, and enjoy time outdoors in a marvellous wooded oasis.
How far would you venture to discover Western Painted Turtles, a stunning wildlife sanctuary, a nature house, a cricket match, an equestrian centre, a rowing pavilion, miles of nature trails and a butterfly garden? Rest assured, you do not have to travel far! To my delight, Burnaby Lake Regional Park has it all. Located in the heart of Burnaby, adjacent to the busy Trans Canada highway, lies a natural oasis and sports haven.
The word “museum” often conjures up childhood memories of school field trips, shuffling from one dark and stuffy room to another, and staring at historical memorabilia through glass cases labelled “Do Not Touch”, while constantly being shhh’d by teachers. Perhaps these stale memories are the reason for my hesitancy to visit Burnaby’s most beloved museum.
But the classic carousel, picturesque town, and friendly guides quickly turned my apathy to intrigue as I strolled through the historic village for the first time. Here are some of the great things to see and do at the Burnaby Village Museum.

BC boasts a bounty of beautiful lakes, attracting tourists from around the world to swim, boat and enjoy a quiet lakeside getaway, but there are some lesser-known watering holes located right in the Metro Vancouver area that are equally as enchanting.
All less than an hour’s drive from downtown Vancouver, these 4 lakes are worth the short trek, even if some are not suitable for swimming. Stroll, bike, bird watch, picnic or play in one of these sweet little sanctuaries, without having to leave the comforts of the city.
