It’s no secret that some of the best bartenders in the world live and work right here in Vancouver – when they’re not winning or judging global competitions, of course. Now, you can witness a new wave of top talents compete on home turf during national bartending competition Made with Love. The interactive event – currently hosted in Canada, Mexico and Spain – challenges bartenders across the country to flex their cocktail creativity by shaking up innovative and exciting drinks judged by a panel of experts, as well as the public.

Five Pride-Themed Cocktails To Drink in Support of the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation in Vancouver (with a recipe included!)

Summer and well-crafted cocktails pair incredibly well together. If they help further a worthy cause, the sipping is that much better.

This summer, from July 14 to August 6, 2017, in the lead-up to Vancouver’s annual Pride celebration, over 45 local bars and restaurants will be serving signature cocktails, with partial proceeds going to the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation.

With a grand title like “Louis XIII Remy Martin Champagne Cognac”, it’s no wonder this rare variety of brandy is referred to as the King of Cognacs. There are a finite number of venues in the world granted the honour of carrying the magic elixir, each designated a “Louis XIII Fortress” – and recently, the Fairmont Pacific Rim became the first hotel in Canada to achieve the esteemed designation (the only other venue in Vancouver carrying Louis XIII is Hawksworth Restaurant).

Elegant and Intoxicating: An Ode to Classic Cocktails in Vancouver

Fancy infusions, liquid nitrogen and inventive ice… these days, it’s par for the course to find your coupe filled with a (damn delicious) work of art – but let’s not forget from whence they came. Yes, I’m talking about The Classic Cocktail.

As with any historical certainty, no one is certain when and where the cocktail originated. What we can agree on is that these stimulating brews traditionally consisted of spirits, sugar and bitters. By the mid-1800s, liqueur had joined as the fourth horseman. And shortly thereafter, the first genuine “cocktails” were born, including our friends the Sazerac, Old Fashioned and Manhattan. If it weren’t for these forerunners, you’d be sipping on bitter bathtub gin.

Top 10 Reasons to Attend Science of Cocktails on Feb. 4

Grant Sceney (Fairmont Pacific Rim) presented the Smoked Pineapple Martini at the Science of Cocktails preview event for a handful of special guests. Sceney was named the 2014 World-Class Canadian Bartender of the Year; he then went on to represent Canada in the Diageo World Class Finals against 46 of the world’s best bartenders and accomplished an impressive overall 4th place finish.
