Come rain or shine you can’t stop the folk in East Van seeking out a great deal at their annual neighbourhood-wide garage sale. Each year on the third Saturday in June, just before Father’s Day, more than 100 households in the Grandview Woodland area between Broadway and the Burrard Inlet and between Clark and Nanaimo set out their stalls and get ready to do business. We spoke with one of the volunteer organisers, Dan Freeman, a transportation planner who lives in the neighbourhood (and loves a garage sale) to find out more.
How did the Great Garage Sale start?
Parts of the neighbourhood have had garage sales for a decade or more which all started when a bunch of families got together after there had been some heated debate in the community after traffic calming measures had been installed. It was part of helping the community come together through a big multi-family garage sale. Last year a few of us got together and expanded it across the whole neighbourhood. Continue reading:
