Family activities at this weekend’s Fan Expo Vancouver

With BC Family Day long weekend approaching, what better way than to spend it with nerds of all ages at the annual Fan Expo Vancouver? There are family rates, and kids under six get in free (kids from six-10 too, just go to the end of the post to see how you can get a coupon).

This year’s event takes place from Feb. 15-17, Sat-Mon, at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Vancouver’s Biggest Costume Party: Cos and Effect, Aug 24-26

Time to drag that Pikachu costume out of your closet.  Vancouver’s biggest costume party is set to descend on UBC this weekend – three straight days of costume competitions, SFX makeup battles, workshops and themed dance parties after dark.

This is the third annual installment of Cos & Effect, described as a “costume, cosplay and alternative fashion convention” that brings out the “diverse geek and sub-culture communities of B.C.”

Cosplay, for the uninitiated, is a far cry from your typical Halloween party.  Hardcore fans don costumes and accessories to literally “become” their favourite characters from the worlds of manga and anime, comic books, video games and films.  They take on the body language, personality and identity of the characters portrayed.

And the Cos & Effect schedule is jam-packed with events where cosplay lovers can strut their stuff.  In total, more than 3,000 cosplay fans are expected to attend.  Tickets are $30, with most events in the UBC Student Union Building.

The headliner is the big costume contest (Saturday, Aug. 25, 6:30 p.m. in the War Memorial Gym): 40 pre-selected contestants will battle it out for more than $2,000 in cash prizes.
