While Vancouver is a fairly green city, with lots of coniferous trees, each fall pockets of the region light up in yellow, gold, and crimson as their leaves change. Hiking is a great way to experience the changing of the seasons. Last year we published a list of seven Vancouver-area hikes where you can experience fall colours. This year we’re back with seven more fall hikes brimming with colour and the crunch of leaves underfoot.

September’s Vancouver Hike of the Month: Mount Strachan

A curious whiskey jack on top of Mount Strachan. Please don’t feed them as it’s not good for their diet. (And they’ll come pose for you even without food.)

The hike to Mount Strachan in Cypress Provincial Park is a bit of a hidden gem. The open summit has great views of Howe Sound and the Lions. And in September, the alpine meadows shift from green to golden orange. There’s also an interesting Cold War-era plane crash to check out along the way. The rocky trail to the summit is moderately challenging, and often poorly marked, so it’s not a hike for beginners.

Vancouver is a pretty green city, both environmentally and literally. We have a LOT of trees. Our mild and wet climate means that Vancouver sits in the middle of the world’s largest temperate rainforest, a zone that stretches from Alaska to Northern California. Logging has removed most of Vancouver’s ancient old growth trees, but there are still lots of towering giants to be found in the area. Here are eight places to see big trees in Vancouver.
