Looking for an “escape” from everyday fun in Vancouver?

Downtown’s first escape gaming room has opened … or should I say locked … its doors. SmartyPantz, located on Abbott Street in Gastown, offers five different themed rooms to escape from – ranging in difficulty from “moderate to diabolical.”

Not familiar with the escape room phenomenon? Inspired by video games, these real-life amusement centres are popular around the world but just taking off in North America. In essence, they’re places where groups of people go to be locked inside a themed room – like a mummy’s tomb or a haunted mansion. Good at puzzles? This may be right up your alley.

Though they’re inspired by video games, escape rooms are real-life rooms where you’re really trapped inside.

Richmond already has one of these escape room attractions and now Vancouver is getting in on the act with a 3,200-square-foot facility opening in Gastown in early 2015. Continue reading:

Would you pay $92 to be locked in a prison cell with three friends for 45 minutes?

That’s the premise behind Exit, Metro Vancouver’s first “escape gaming” experience. Popular in Japan and China, escape rooms force participants to solve elaborate clues in order to break out of their confinement.  The rooms themselves are often elaborately decorated to look like scenes from the past or horror movie sets.

Exit, located in an unassuming strip mall in Richmond, brings the phenomenon to Canadian shores.  It offers guests four different themed rooms to choose from: the prison cell, an Ancient Egyptian tomb, a lost ship and a mad scientist’s laboratory with blood-spattered walls.

Since opening last fall, the facility has been doing a brisk business. Continue reading:
