Indian Street Food, Music, Free Portraits and More: Indian Summer Fest 2015 Hits Vancouver

The phrase Indian summer usually refers to an unexpectedly warm and sunny stretch of weather in autumn, when cooler temperatures are expected.

But in Vancouver, Indian Summer happens each July: an 11-day-long celebration of South Asian arts, culture and cuisine. This year’s Indian Summer Festival, July 9-July 19, promises to be one of the biggest ever, with dozen of events showcasing food, dance, cinema, music and literature from India.

The festival kicks off with a uniquely high-brow take on traditional Indian street food at The Great Railway Food Bazaar, July 9 in downtown Vancouver’s Roundhouse Community Centre ($90). Celebrity chef Vikram Vij and other top Vancouver chefs offer Indian-inspired nibbles, while guests enjoy live Indian music at the historic centre, transformed for one night into an Indian railway station.

A Scintillating Celebration of Arts & Ideas: Indian Summer Festival

East meets west at the second annual Indian Summer Festival, kicking off July 5 for a 10-day celebration of South Asian wellness, music, film, literature and of course cuisine. During this deliciously rich festival of arts and ideas, the SFU Woodward’s Complex and Goldcorp Centre for the Arts will invite the city to visit, experience and explore the culture of India.
